Print at home file – this file can be printed at home on A4 or US letter size paper. Just ensure your printer is set to no scaling or 100% scale.
A0/copy shop file – this is a large format file that can only be printed at a copy shop.
Projector file – this is a file that can be used to display pattern pieces directly onto your fabric. This means there is no need to print and tape pattern pieces. It can save time, money and paper. All of our 2nd generation patterns include projector files.
Sewing Instructions – PDF guide with photos on how to construct your garment. Printable on A4/US letter but we recommend reading directly from a tablet or laptop to preserve detail.
How do I print my pattern?
PDF print at home file can be printed on A4 or US letter size paper. After downloading the file to a laptop or desktop computer (avoid using a tablet or smartphone as some cannot open zip files), open it in Adobe Reader and select File/Print. Verify that your printer is set to 100% scale, no scaling, or actual size. Only print the page with a test square. Before printing the rest of the PDF file, measure the 10×10 cm or 2×2″ test square to ensure that the printing scale is correct.
You can also take the A0 file to a copy shop and have it printed in large format. Make it clear to the copy shop that you want it printed without scaling or at 100% scale.
What if I don’t have a printer at home?
Send the pattern files to your local copy shop and tell them to print at 100% or no scaling. Before printing the entire file, request that they print page 1 of the pattern file and measure the 5x5cm or 2×2″ box.
To save money and be more environmentally friendly, I recommend reading the PDF specification sheet and sewing instructions on your tablet or laptop. More detail may also be visible in the sewing instruction photos.
I have printed onto A4/US letter - what do I do with the printed pattern pages?
Tape or glue the pages together in the specification sheet’s recommended order. Match the symbols that appear on the page’s top, bottom, or sides. Simply cut around the dotted lines of the size you want (or trace off your required size) with the size key, and you’re ready to cut out your fabric.
I reviewed the sizing chart but am still unsure which size to get for my child.
The children’s patterns are fairly generous. If the child is in the 70th percentile on the growth charts, choose the size based on his or her age. A size 2yr is designed to be worn during the child’s second year; it will be roomy and a little long on a 24 month old (assuming they are in the 70th percentile), but they should be able to grow into it by 2.5yrs. When the child reaches the age of three, he or she will most likely be ready for the next size up. If you’re still not sure, I recommend mocking up the garment in a less expensive or scrap fabric first to test the fit. Alternatively, compare the provided finished garment measurements to a garment you know fits your child well.
Are seam allowances included in the patterns?
Yes, all seam allowances are included.
Most seams for woven styles are 1cm (3/8″).
Do I need an overlocker to sew these styles?
Straight stitched and overlocked seams are included in all woven style instructions. However, if french seams are used, many of the styles are suitable for people without an overlocker; however, French seams are not covered in the instructions.
If you contact me at dearbillypatterns@gmail.com, I will be happy to give you advice on specific styles.
Do I already need to be able to sew to use these patterns?
Yes you will need some sewing knowledge to use these patterns.
Sewing Ability:
BEGINNER – a project suitable for someone with little sewing experience, but it will not teach you how to sew. To learn the fundamentals of garment construction, you may still need to take a sewing class.
ADVANCED BEGINNER – This level is appropriate for someone who has some experience sewing clothes from commercial patterns.
INTERMEDIATE – for experienced sewers
